Onward: Trainiing the Mind

Life is precious
Life is fragile
Death is sudden and strikes without warning
Cause and Effect are inescapable
Suffering in the conditioned world is inescapable
Liberation is beneficial
A teacher might be helpful

I love that we have shared these words with each other; that these same have been shared by so many others before us. After leaving the zendo one Sunday, Angela and I went to breakfast with some others and they asked us to recite some of the words we use in our practice. And as we had just repeated these just before our final bows, right there in the restaurant I repeated our words beginning with "Life is precious ...."

Simple and direct and clear. Words that one could share at a breakfast table.

The whole business of being part of sangha is mysteriously powerful and something I have never experienced in this manner in my life. It offers, I feel, support for each of us to manifest who we are.

Thank you all.

Thanks, Dwight, for your words. Neat!

I have been thinking about the line, 'A teacher might be helpful' and I am snapped back to the Genkokoan about studying the self...then there is more, but just that much at present. I know that everything is teacher, but what a teacher the self is, what a 'book' to be read and studied. To be forgotten eventually, hopefully, but in the meantime...some pretty good, and sometimes tough reading. A bit of a mystery story and one can't skip to the last chapter to find out how it ends.
